Four students are running the mile in P.E. class. Their times are 7.54 minutes, 7.43 minutes, 8.06 minute, and 11.52 minutes. About how many minutes did it take all four of them to run the mile?

What is the range of the students' times?

What is the median?

What is the mode?

 

Division

A building has a staircase with 108 steps.  If there are 12 steps between each floor, how many floors does the building have?

Extension: How many steps would the building have if there were 18 floors?

 

 

Multi-operational with Decimals

You are helping your family plan Thanksgiving dinner. Your job is to pick a turkey that costs no more than $20. Food Lion has turkeys on sale this week for 47 cents per pound. What is the largest turkey that you can purchase to feed your family at Thanksgiving? Part 2: As a surprise you want to prepare dessert for your family. To create this dessert you need two pie crusts and pie filling. The pie crusts cost $1.62 each and the filling costs $2.37 per pie. In order to fit your budget, what size turkey must you buy in order to be able to buy the pie crusts also?

 

Mrs. Green goes to the candy store to make a cake for her class. A pound of Hershey's chocolate costs $3.00. Mrs. Green only needs half a pound. M&M's are $2.00 a bag, but she needs 3 bags. Sprinkles are $1.25 a jar, and she needs 2 jars. The school has only given her $15 to spend. About how much is the cost of Mr.s Green's candy? How much change does she have left over? With the change left over, estimate what other candies she could buy.

 

Division Multiple Tower Problem

You have 376 chocolate chips. According to the recipe each cookie needs 12 chocolate chips. How many cookies would be able to make? If there is a remainder, what would be your solution for the ones left over?

 

Ezekiel is hosting a bubble party. Packs of bubbles come in 8. He has invited 234 people. How many packs would he need and if there are some left over how many would there be?

 

You have been waiting in line for the Intimidator at Carowinds for 43 minutes. You estimate there are 59 people ahead of you. If the rollercoaster holds 16 people each train and your estimation is correct, how many trains will pass by you  before yo are able to load that same train? How many times will the train round so that you will be able to ride? How do you know? (extension - each ride takes a total of 3.5 minutes. How much longer will you be waiting in line before you are able to get on the ride? Overall what is your total time waiting for the intimidator? Construct your answer in total minutes and then hours.

 

Mrs. Lewis has 121 books in her classroom. If 10 children are reading, how many books will each child get? How many would be left over?

 

3rd graders at Fred L. Wilson are going to take a tour around Kannapolis to learn about their community. They will stop at the library and Food Lion. There are 136 3rd graders. If each bus holds 30 children, how many buses will they need?

 

There are 130 third and fourth graders and 8 teachers going to the baseball game. One bus can hold 45 people. How many buses will they need to take everyone to the park?

 

The PTA is planning the end of year picnic. Sixty three students, eight teachers, and thirty parents will be attending. Hot dogs come in packages of 10 and buns come in packages of 8. How mnay of each does the PTA need to purchase in order for each person to get one hotdog and bun? How many hotdogs and buns will be leftover?

 

We are going to the movies and we have a $37 gift card for our family of three. Popcorn cost $5.75, drinks cost $2.69, and candy cost $3.28. We want to use as much of the gift card as possible. Estimate to find out if each one of us can get all three choices. Show your work and explain your answer. Can we buy anything extra?

 

There are three gas stations near your house. The closest has gas for $3.79. The second closest has gas for $3.68, but it takes a 1/2 gallon to get to the station. The cheapest gas is the farthest away, it cost $ 3.45 but it takes a gallon to get there. If you have a 14 gallon tank which station is the best deal? How much would it cost you art each station if you rounded to the nearest tenth? Can you fill up at any of the stations if you only have $50.00? How much would it cost you at each station if you rounded to the nearest dollar?

 

The student council is making stockings for the Children's Hospital. In the stockings they will include candy canes, coloring books, and crayons. If the canday canes come in bozes of 12, coloring books come in packs of 10 and crayons come in packs of 8, how much of each item will they need to purchase for their 80 patients? What will the total cost for these items ( candy canes  = $1.50 per box, coloring books - $6.50 pack, crayons - $5.75 pack) After the stockings have been made, how much of each item remains)

 

Place Value: Tasks - Estimation

Jamie, Jimmy, Judi, and Johnny each wanted to buy candy items from the Texaco gas station. Jamie wanted three packs of Wrigley's gum. Jimmy wanted a jumbo-sized Mounds bar. Judi and Johnny wanted to go in together to get two sourpatch kids and a jumbo sized Reese's cup. If each child had $ 4.50, eastimate their total change to the nearest tenth if the candy totals the following amounts: Wrigley's .42, Mounds $3.12, Sourpatch Kids $1.02, Reese's Cup $2.34  Choices A. 9.40  B. 12.30  C. 10.00  D. 11.00

 

How can this task be modified? Where do students struggle with place value and estimation?

Estimation problem - Mrs. Lowery is furnishing her classroom. She is buying two chairs originally priced at $45.89, however they are marked half off. Next she is going to buy 5 packs of pencils originally priced $3.69 and are 15% off. Finally she is purchasing 2 packs of crayons for $1.00 and 20 composition notebooks for $2.00 each and 15 rulers for .50 each. She has $300.00 to spend. How much money will she have left over?

 

You are getting a new cell phone. After rebates it costs $59.99. You are on a family share plan with mom, dad, and your sister. The monthly fee is $69.99 plus an additional $9.99 for each extra line. Each phone has 100 texts. But if you use more than 100 each text will cost .13. Dad has the internet on his phone for $19.95 each month. How much will you pay in the first month if you have no overages? How much in the second month with no overages? How much is each person responsible for? How much extra would your bill be if you went over in texts by 59. Estimate the bill on an average month without new phones or overages.

 

Mrs. Woods is buying her class rice crispy treats for the class party. They cost $4.99 for a box of 12 at Bi-Lo. They are on sale for $2.00 off. Mrs. Woods has a coupon for 0.35 off, which is doubled at Bi-Lo. There are 28 students in the class, how many boxes does she need to buy? how much will it cost? Will there be any treats left over?

 

Have students create a sales flyer for a local grocery store using multiple numbers, have each team plan a meal with at least three courses and beverage from the flyer, list all prices. Have partners estimate cost for family of 5, calculate the actual amount and 7% sales tax.

 

Jackson needs 9 batteries for his remote control car. Batteries come in packs of 8. How many packs of batteries does he need to buy? If the batteries cost 6.99 a pack, how much will he spend?

 

Jameer purchased a box of Krispy Kreme donuts everyday Monday-Friday. On Monday he ate one donut, Tuesday he ate two donuts, Wednesday he ate three donuts and so on. On Saturday how many donuts were left over?

 

There are 8 hot dog buns in a package if you buy 6 packages for a party how many hot dogs do you need to buy?

Mr. Moody has to stack chairs. He stacked 9 chairs near the door. How many total chair legs were in his stack?

 

You have bought a dozen doughnuts for everyday of the school week. How many doughnuts would you have purchased by the end? If 1/3 of the doughnuts were chocolate, how many more would be left over as glazed?

 

The tennis teacm receives 30 tennis balls for a week's practice. Tennis balls come in packs of three. How many packs would have been purchased? How many would you purchase for a month's time?

 

Hot dog buns come in packs of 8. The buns come in packs of 6. If we have to feed 56 people how many packs would need to be purchased and how many are left over? What could you do with the leftovers?

 

Lucy has to read a book with 205 pages. If she want to finish the book in 7 days, will she be able to read the same amount every night? If not, create a plan for her to finish on time and explain your reasoning
